A Woman's Right to Shoes

Every time I buy another pair of shoes (approximately every 3 weeks based on the number of shoes I acquired last year, divided by the amount of weeks per year) I inevitably have to answer the question “why do you need so many shoes?” My answer is simple, and hasn’t really changed since I started buying shoes en masse in grade 12: because I can. I’ve given up justifying to people my shoe addiction because I don’t feel that I should have to. Yes, I admit it is an addiction – Hi, my name is Riella, and I’m a shoe addict – but I’m totally okay with it. If I’m okay with it, then you should be okay with it. I haven’t given up my shoes yet, even though I had to pay quite a bit of money to ship them across the country when I moved, so don’t ever expect me to give them up! So learn to love it, or leave it alone, because I sure won’t leave my babies!

Sexy & the City

I can’t even form the words to gush about how much I love “Sexy and the City” by China Glaze. It is nail polish perfection, and oh so deserving of its title! Sparkle on ladies!

Fashion & the City

The leading ladies from Sex and the City are all known for their distinctive style, so this week is a nod to their unique fabulousness! Which of the girls are you? I'm mostly Miranda (sarcasm, etc), but I have quite a bit of Carrie as well (no one else would have the ridiculous amount of shoes as she and I do)! For the item details check out my Polyvore account.

Your 20s are to Learn the Lessons

image borrowed from this website

It’s just a little tv show, supposedly about sex in NYC, but it’s been one of the most inspiring things I’ve ever known. Sex and the City is about a lot more than just sex; it’s about love, friendship, laughter, adventures, and of course fashion! I could write an entire book on my favourite quotes/moments from Sex and the City, but I’ll distill it down to a few of my favourites so you don’t get overwhelmed.

“Don’t laugh at me, but maybe we can be each other’s soul mates, and men can just be these great guys to have fun with.” ~ Charlotte

The most important people in my life are my friends, and a guy is just lucky to come in somewhere down the line. I don’t like the idea of being reliant on a man for my happiness, and friendships tend to be more stable than men. Sorry guys, but there’s a reason why I’m still best friends with my best friends. Two of them I’ve known since I was a Star Wars-obsessed child, and two of them I’ve known since my awkward high school years, and even though we have our ups and downs and sometimes don’t talk for years, they’ll always be my favourite people. They’re just as weird and strange as I am, they get me, and that’s why we’re still together. You know who you are bitches <3

“I have a broken toe, not a broken spirit.” ~ Samantha

It might be the hardest thing to do, but somehow we just have to keep going. Giving up is for the weak, and giving in to hardships isn’t going to help you grow as a person. Sometimes flaws can be good things, and the hurts that we’ve suffered in the past are what make us the strong people we are today. Sure, take a moment of weakness, but turn it around and work it out. Trust me, eventually you’ll look back and laugh.

“How did it happen that four such smart women have nothing to talk about but boyfriends? It's like seventh grade with bank accounts.” ~ Miranda

Sorry to burst your bubble Miranda, but we talk about boyfriends, and will continue to do so because it’s entertaining. Sure, a deep philosophical conversation is nice, and the topic of books is always popular in my circle, but men (or in most cases, boys) are a never-ending subject matter. Whether we’re bitching about how annoying they are or gushing about how this adorable guy just asked us out, we’ll never drop the subject. Maybe we’ll stop when we get married, but I’m pretty sure guys magically start being perfect when they put a ring on it, so good luck stopping the guy-gossip! And really, we’re only in our 20s. Marriage is for saps anyways!

“Some women aren’t meant to be tamed. Maybe they just need to run free until they find someone just as wild to run with.” ~ Carrie

I’m just going to say it: this is what was wrong with every single one of my past relationships. I will not be changed by a man, and I refuse to be anything but my wild and intense self. It’s not my fault they can’t keep up! Here’s a hint boys: start running. Maybe someday you’ll catch up with my awesomeness.

You’re my White Pony!

Puma "Speedcat" trainers
(aka the only sporty shoes I own)
Sometimes what we’re looking for is staring us right in the face, but it takes a psychic to clue us in to reality. The white stallion isn’t what we’re led to believe he’ll be, so maybe it’s time we stop assuming that love will look like what we expect. Take a second look at the guys who you’ve put in the “friend zone” over the years; you never know, some of them might be worth a second look. Especially if he has really good footwear!

The One That Got Away

It’s been a year since you ended us. Some people still refer to you as the one who got away, but honestly I still want bitch slap you. I’m over the fact that you left, mostly because I came to the realization that I was worth about 10 of you. I have my life together, I’m going places, and I have more talent in my pinky finger than you’ll ever have. In the long run your choice was good, because you would have held me back from my full potential, and I can’t be with someone who I look down on and don’t respect as an equal. So really, you’re not the one who got away, because that implies that what we had was something worthwhile. It’s pretty obvious that it wasn’t special, and neither were you. Just another frog prince, who I had to kiss to prove that I’m better off on my own. After all, my best friends are my soulmates, and the most important person in my life is me.

Singles Awareness Day

Here's to the men that we love,
Here's to the men that love us,
But the men that we love will never love us,
So fuck all the men
Here's to us!

Who Do You Think You Are?

Pink Duchess "Serena" heels

Who do I think I am?
I'm just the baddest bitch on the block.
I'm either your best friend, or your worst nightmare.
I am a superstar, and I tell myself that every single fucking day.
I can be a walking contradiction if I so chose,
and I am defined by no one but myself.
You're shocked by who I am, what I wear, and what I say?
Well, that's what I meant to happen, so get used to it babe!
So, who do you think you are?

Bet Me and Lose, Boys

It's never a good idea to go up against Girl Power, so I felt that this matte purple polish was the perfect choice for Spice Girls week because of its name. "Bet Me and Lose" by Icing is a solid , slightly metallic, matte purple, that looks even better with a shiney topcoat. It takes 3 coats (if my memory serves me) to get an opaque finish, and it also takes a while to dry because the formula is so thick, but it's totally worth it. Because it's a thicker formula it has a terrible tendency to smudge in chunks while drying, and forget about a quick removal. Though when you start to take it off, the purple tone comes off first, and you get a kind of lavendar-tinted silver that's really quite pretty. From what I've seen of other matte polishes, it's very much like OPI's suede version of "OPI Ink," so it's not exactly an original colour, but everyone should have a pretty purple like this one!

even with just the matte finish, it's pretty shiney

I used the Sally Hansen Hard as Nails Hardener as the topcoat

the topcoat really brings out the sparkles!

Spice Up Your Life

Call me a child of the 90s if you will, but the Spice Girls are still one of my favourite fashion inspirations! Check out my Polyvore account for the item details :) I didn't specify which Spice Girl each of these collections is supposed to represent, but if you don't automatically know, then shame, shame on you for not knowing 90s fashion basics! (BTW sorry that the borders overlap. the html thinger was fighting me).

Girl Power

image from here

We’ve been talking a lot in our management class about employment equality, and what this means to us as upcoming professionals. As a woman, the consensus is that we still have to struggle against unfair employment opportunities, and discrimination in the workplace. Sometimes I agree with the hardline stance (sexual harassment is never okay), and I don’t terribly mind getting a leg up by equality acts, but I’m not sure that the whole practice is fair. If girl power and feminism are meant to promote equality between the sexes, then why should women get this little bonus when it comes to employment?

Are women that unqualified that we can’t compete with the men in our fields? Assuming that women require help to get the same job as a man is frankly insulting, and promotes the negative stereotype that women can’t do what men can. Sometimes it’s inevitable that we require external help, but the same can be said of both sexes. Not everyone can do everything, but maybe it’s time that we should assume that everyone is capable of learning the same stuff if they apply an equal amount of effort.

Women of the world, if we want to be taken seriously then maybe we should consider stepping up and earning our place alongside men. We expect the same of them, so why aren’t we holding ourselves to the same standard? We can’t logically be expected to be treated with the same amount of respect as men if we don’t earn it. That’s why when my dad waxes eloquent about cars I pay attention. I may not be able to change a tire or my oil, but I know that you can filter the impurities from dirty diesel with a coffee filter, and that you can run a diesel engine on old french fry oil, leftover motor oil, and jet fuel. If you don’t believe me, go ask my dad, because that’s exactly what he did with our 1981 Mercedes-Benz 300D. Now, how many of you guys out there knew that!
